Topic:

So your company has no budget for fancy 3rd party tools. Don’t worry, the SQL community has got your back.

It’s hard to believe how many free tools are available to data professionals. It’s even more amazing just how good these tools are. These are very mature and tested projects that I split into three main subject areas.

1. Realtime analysis, troubleshooting and performance tuning
2. Automation and productivity enhancement
3. Governance and controls

In this talk, I discuss some of the tools I couldn’t live without that are free to use and developed by members of the SQL Community. I’ll talk about how you can use them to make your job easier and how to convince your boss that they are safe to use.

These tools will save you time and money, and if used correctly can greatly enhance your skills and personal value as a DBA.

The target audience is DBAs and people who look after SQL Servers or Azure SQL databases, even if they don’t call themselves DBAs. Although it may seem aimed only at people who work at companies who don’t like buying 3d party solutions, each product I discuss has no better paid for solution in the market in my opinion.
